Last week, our pilot group of students completed their studies in our two-year work-study program. The program was formed through a partnership between Mission Santa Maria, ESPOL University in Guayaquil and DP World Shipping. The program culminates after two years of studying engineering and megaelectronics at ESPOL, the top public university in Guayaquil, while gaining hands-on experience at the international shipping company through internships.

The five students who participated in this pilot program with Mission Santa Maria are all graduates of Santa Maria del Fiat School and come from resource-limited families in our community. This incredible opportunity was made possible through the scholarships they received from Mission Santa Maria. The scholarships paid for their housing, tuition, and living expenses during their time in the program. Over the past two years, they have lived, studied, and worked in Pasorja, Ecuador, to complete the program.
- Participants were given mementos commemorating their completion of the work study program.
- Jenny, Mission Santa Maria’s post-high school ambassador, spoke at the closure ceremony on behalf of Mission Santa Maria and our scholarship recipients.
- The students and staff gathered at the closure ceremony to celebrate completing the two year work-study program.
Each participant has submitted job applications to the shipping ports and is now awaiting news on their employment status. We remain hopeful that all of them will secure positions in the industry, paving the way for a brighter future for themselves and their families.
As this group prepares to embark on the next step in their professional journeys’, we welcome another 6 students into the program. The next group will beg
